Block party makes for great neighborhood outreach

NEW HAVEN: The Winchester Newhall Club of the Communist Party got a great reception during the annual Newhall St. block party. Decorated with a "Jobs Not Jails" banner and copies of Black Lives Matter by Jarvis Tyner, the neighborhood club table featured a petition calling on members of the Connecticut Congressional Delegation to co-sponsor the Employ Young Americans Now Act. The Act would create 1 million summer and year round jobs with priority for low-income youth in Black and Latino communities. Everyone was eager to sign.

Do youth have a stake in November's election?

Student debt has exceeded $1.2 trillion. One third of black men are serving time in prison, and young black men are 21 times more likely to be killed by police than whites. Republicans are attacking DACA and aiming to deport more undocumented students. At the same time, unemployment persists at eighty percent for youth of color, and voter ID laws have quelled youth voter turnout in many states. What do we say? Stand up, fight back, VOTE!

Call to Action: No Grand Bargain on the backs of Working People

It is cruel and divisive to whip up hysteria around the so-called "fiscal cliff" crisis. The calls to make benefit cuts to Social Security and Medicare go in the opposite direction of the mandate delivered by the majority of voters on November 6. The message of the election clearly was: tax the wealthy more and protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
