Dear friend,

May Day, International Worker’s Day, is a holiday born right here in the United States. Celebrated around the world on May First, the holiday commemorates the struggle for the eight-hour day and the Haymarket martyrs who died in its course.

May Day symbolizes the inherent yearning for dignity, the international solidarity between every-day people, and the power of working people’s unity. Immigrant rights, equal pay for equal work, affirmative action, workplace safety, and every other issue of worker’s rights has a place on May Day.

This year, May Day marks the kick-off of the national fundraising campaign for the Communist Party USA. The Fund Drive runs until July 4, another date with revolutionary significance. Our goal is to raise $50,000 from members, supporters, allies and friends. We hope you will help us achieve it today.

Achieving this year’s annual Fund Drive goal is more important than ever. The Bush Administration, though severely wounded, is still dangerous, and is driving the attack on the rights of working people, people of color and women around the country. It is continuing its insane and brutal occupation of Iraq. It is the architect of the most blatant assaults on democratic rights at home and abroad.

The Communist Party is a key partner in these struggles. Our organization has earned respect in national and local coalitions alike. Our members are elected leaders in their unions, they are diligent workers in peace committees, they fight for unity in community organizations, and they throw themselves into the key election campaigns around the country.

What makes the Communist Party such an important part of the growing movements for peace, democracy and equality? Not only do we have an unparalleled history of struggle and sacrifice, we have a strategy for action and a vision for the future.

Our strategy is defined in our Party Program, “The Road to Socialism USA: Unity for Peace, Democracy, Jobs, and Equality.” It calls for building the broadest possible unity to defeat the ultra-right stranglehold on politics in this country. Our strategy to put the people’s movements on the path to victory, toward implementing progressive agenda in the U.S., is first and foremost to defeat Bush and the Bush Agenda.

The Communist Party also has a long-term vision. We have a vision of a better world, a world based on human need not corporate greed. We struggle for a system that puts people and nature before profits. We fight for a Socialist USA, a country where working people control their own destinies.

In order for the Communist Party to play its unique role in the movement, to help lead the fight against Bush and the ultra-right, we need your continued support. Your contribution today will go a long way to helping us play a bigger role in today’s struggles. Your contribution today will help us improve our web page, build the People’s Weekly World newspaper and Political Affairs magazine. Your contribution today will help us build a national staff that can build a bigger and better Party. Your contribution today will help us support and guide the work of the vibrant and radical Young Communist League which this month will have its 8th National Convention.

We have a modest goal that only provides a small amount of our annual budget, but it is essential for us to reach our goal in order to continue our work to change the world.

We have no corporate sponsors, no interests other than those of the working people who are our members and friends. We depend on working people digging deep and giving from their hearts.
