In some ways last night's State of the Union address by President Obama was a virtuoso performance. There were stirring moments, memorable turns of phrase, humor, a defense of activist government, and proposals that will be welcomed, and surely help, millions of people in need.
For decades, the CPUSA has been involved in the struggle for the rights of immigrant workers and their families. Recently, this struggle has been intensified by increased activity both of the immigrants and their labor and community supporters, and of anti-immigrant organizations. A central focus has been gaining legal rights for the 11 million undocumented.
Public education is under attack. Severe budget cuts resulting in cuts in programs, teaching and other personnel and material resources have become the norm in recent years. The attack is disguised with progressive sounding phrases such as "improving failing schools" and overcoming the "achievement gap." But this current wave of "reform" threatens to dismantle our schools for the greater profit of finance capital and to the detriment of our children...
