Resistance, Democratic Revolution, and the Midterms: What do Lenin’s insights reveal?

Should the working class be fighting for democracy under capitalism?  The Mensheviks said no; Lenin’s answer was a resounding YES!
“Two Tactics” was written at the height of a mass insurgency against a reactionary regime. Sound familiar? In this influential essay, Lenin introduces the notion of a ‘decisive defeat’ of reactionary forces and explains that such an outcome is only possible with working class leadership of a broad democratic coalition. As we struggle against our  own would-be despot and the reactionary forces that brought him to power, Lenin’s insight is more important than ever:
the working class will win its political independence by joining the struggle for democracy, not by sitting on the sidelines.
Questions to be examined:
  • What does Lenin mean by political independence for the working class?
  • What constitutes a ‘decisive defeat’ of reactionary forces and what is the role of the working class in achieving it?
  • What forces are part of the democratic movement?
  • How does class struggle relate to democratic revolution?
