The August 10 declaration by the Bush administration of a more repressive immigration policy, if put into effect, will create fascist like conditions for 12 million undocumented workers and their families.. The impact of the new policy which criminalizes the undocumented will lower living standards for working people and undermine the democracy giving a green light to greater racism,
national oppression and intolerance of all kinds.

The long term solution to the immigration issue includes an end to trade and economic policies that enrich corporations while impoverishing workers and small farmers of other countries. As well it includes the establishment of equal rights for immigrant workers to end the special exploitation of these vulnerable workers.

This summer the House Republican leadership is spearheading a new wave of racism by holding 32 hearings on anti-immigrant legislation. Many are field hearings across the country, strategically placed to impact on the 2006 elections. The We Are America Alliance and associated organizations are mobilizing to get out a pro-immigrant message at each field hearing location.

George W. Bush’s speech to the nation on May 15, 2006 highlighting deployment of the National Guard to the Mexican border represents an aggressive policy of racist, anti-immigrant demonization and hysteria. It was a demagogic attempt to mobilize the conservative base and appeal to fear in the lead-up to the November Election, and impact the current Senate debate...

Below are important sample materials that can help move the struggle for immigrant rights forward. The Senate debate is expected in February. Many grass roots organizations are beginning to move. As mentioned in earlier memos we urge the Districts, clubs, activists to raise the issues with their Senators and especially any that are members of the Judiciary Committee. The materials can be adapted to your local situation by coalitions or grass roots groups and/or used by clubs as they are. (PDF versions of flyer and petition are attached.)

Last December, the House of Representatives passed anti-immigrant HR 4437, introduced by GOP Rep. James Sensenbrenner (Wis.).

• It would make all undocumented workers felons, as well as those who help or work with them including teachers, clergy, union leaders, social workers and family members.
• Employers would have to check the Social Security numbers of all their employees.
• An environmentally destructive wall would be built along the Mexican border.
• Local and state police would be deputized to arrest anyone they think may be without documents. This would vastly increase racial profiling and scare immigrants away from reporting crimes...

The passage of HR 4437, “Border Protection, Anti-Terrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005 by a 239-182 margin by the House of Representatives December 17 represents a police state approach to immigration that is a dangerous threat to the basic rights of undocumented and documented immigrants and all the people of our country.
