At Carnegie Hall, on February 23 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a commemorative speech on the 100th anniversary of the birth of W.E.B. Du Bois. In his speech, King stated, “it is time to cease muting the fact that Dr. Du Bois was a genius and chose to be a Communist”.

Upon Du Bois’s death in 1963 and King’s death in 1968, both had grown more radical in their contention aimed at capitalism – and concerns about America’s anti-communist sentiments. By exploring their interpretation of biblical literature, images, and shared concerns about capitalism, this session elevates the often forgotten struggles against capitalism by Du Bois in the year of his 150th birthday, and the emerging radical capacity of King in the 50th year of his death.
