Abolish prisons and immigrant detention centers

We need to explicitly call for the abolition of the prison system and immigrant detention centers. Millions of members of our class – predominantly Black, Latino and Native American are in prison or under the “supervision” of the criminal system. This system has nothing to do with protecting society from crime. It must be dismantled. It is not only destructive to the individuals involved, but devastating to their families and working-class communities across the nation. For example, the Nation magazine reports that half of black woman must live with the situation where at least one of their family members is locked up. The nation spends $1 trillion annually on this system, feeding an industry that supports the most racist, anti-immigrant and anti worker political agendas.
