In a 38-minute tirade before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, President Donald Trump bragged about kidnapping foreign leaders, bombing fishing boats in the Caribbean, starting an unjust war on Iran, and deeming Cuba a failed state. He singled out the Communist Party USA, Democratic Socialists of America and “Antifa” as part of a “coordinated subversive network” allegedly controlled by Cuba.
“That’s a complete and unadulterated fabrication,” said CPUSA Co-Chair Rossana Cambron. “Our policies are made exclusively in the USA.”
Trump’s speech was full of baseless superlatives about the strength of the economy and the supposed prosperity of its citizens. Thanks to himself, he claimed, the U.S. has achieved a “Golden Age.”
“The entire world is being lifted by the wealth, strength, spirit, and momentum of a newly energized and a very powerful United States,” he said.
Trump claimed all nations should protect their sovereignty, but then bragged about the myriad of ways his administration has violated the sovereignty of dozens of nations—including kidnapping the elected President and First Lady of Venezuela, letting U.S.-based monopolies help themselves to Venezuela’s oil, taking credit for military strikes on boats that have killed 234 people so far, and starting an unprovoked war on Iran.
He called Cuba a “haven for foreign adversaries” and boasted that the Communist Party of Cuba was “under great pressure, the biggest pressure they’ve ever been under.” The Cuban delegation rightfully walked out in protest.
Trump concluded: “Communism will never be coming to America, but freedom will be coming to Cuba.”
CPUSA Co-Chair Joe Sims scoffed at Trump’s accusations: “Our relations with Cuba are open and public. We affirm our right to have those relations and affirm the right of the Cuban people to live free of imperialist aggression as well as to exercise their right to self-determination.”
Anita Waters, Organizational Secretary of the CPUSA, said: “Trump calls Cuba a failed state, but the only failure is the cruel and bankrupt policy of the United States, which seeks to starve the Cuban people into submission.”
“We don’t conspire. We organize. Too late, Mr. President,” she said. “We’ve been here for 107 years and we’re not going away.”
