Communist Party, USA: Resolution on Building the Peoples Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo Newspaper

BY: 28th National Convention| July 20, 2005

Whereas, in the period since the 27th Convention of the Communist Party, USA (CPUSA) the Peoples Weekly World (PWW) has experienced exciting changes: a modern, graphic look; new editorial offices in a gleaming, newly renovated building in Chicago; a more attractive website with now a daily Online eXtra; increasing the number of Nuestro Mundo pages to 3; several talented new staff members; a regularly functioning editorial collective; a surge in volunteer writers and photographers; a tremendous growth in website traffic with the paper routinely indexed by Google News and elsewhere; membership in the International Labor Communications Association, an AFL-CIO affiliate and the Independent Press Association; and,

Whereas, in this age of communication revolution the communist press can boldly go where no communist press has gone before; our website can become a trusted daily source of news and views to hundreds of thousands, even millions. Daily blogs, Internet radio, streaming video are all possibilities. Our coverage needs to deepen and expand, especially to include sports coverage! But it will take grassroots, working-class persistence to build a broader base of subscribers and supporters; and,

Whereas, the paper has played an outstanding role, week after week, in the fight against the Iraq war, in the 2004 elections, and in the fight to save Social Security, among many other struggles against the Bush administration and its allies, in order to build a broad, all-peoples coalition against the ultra-right and to build the Communist Party and the Young Communist League (YCL), a larger readership of the PWW is necessary. The PWW is invaluable in building unity in action, and coalitions that have punch with depth and that last; and,

Whereas, the PWW is an indispensable club tool for organizing in a workplace or neighborhood. As a national, grassroots newspaper its articles provide talking points with co-workers, neighbors, friends and family membersto expand their range of vision and build class consciousness. Getting someone to read the paper and, even better, to subscribe, is an important step in strengthening our relationship with them and convincing them to join the Party or the YCL; and,

Whereas, the PWW and Nuestro Mundo articles are used as tools for the progressive movement, often reprinted in other publications and linked on numerous websites, in both Spanish and English, are used in press packets, organizing kits, enlarged as posters, and hung on bulletin boards; and,

Whereas, the PWW, including its Spanish-language section, Nuestro Mundo, has a weekly publication schedule which allows for consistent outreachnot hit or misson current issues and struggles, and projects a serious image for the Party and YCL, with 80 years of revolutionary journalism behind us; and,

Whereas, the PWW provides news, information and Marxist-Leninist analysis in a popular format, and preserves the history, traditions and culture of the working-class movement, the movements against racism and other forms of oppression, and the movement for socialism worldwide; and,

Whereas, our Partys Constitution emphasizes building the press, including the clause, [Members] shall also read, circulate and help improve Party publications. All members shall circulate the press and make work with the press central to their mass activity;

Therefore be it resolved, that every level of the Party needs a plan for circulating the press that dovetails with the Partys overall plan of work; and,

Be it further resolved, that circulation and most importantlySELLING SUBSCRIPTIONSshall be a project of the Party as a whole, and not just a few comrades. The CPUSA will set a doable goal for new subs and bundle orders. One organizer sold 50 subscriptions by setting up meetings with his contacts. To sell a subscription means to develop a relationship with an ally. It deepens your relationship with that person and that persons relationship to the movement for democracy and socialism; and, Be it further resolved, that where possible PWW bureaus be set up to include district and club leadership, along with people who arent members but like to write or take photographs. Bureaus should also help work out circulation plans for the area; and, Be it further resolved, that every comrade will redouble efforts to help raise money for the papers production, and reach the 2005 PWW fund drive goal.

Adopted by the 28th National Convention of the Communist Party, USA, Chicago, IL; July 1-3, 2005.
