March 31st would have been Cesar Chavez's 81st birthday.
This date also coincided with the March National Committee

On March 6, the Bush administration's Immigration Control
Enforcement (ICE) department of Homeland Security carried
out a brutal immigration raid on Michael Bianco, Inc. in New
Bedford, Massachusetts, arresting 350 workers. The company
received nearly a million dollars in military contracts to
produce backpacks being used by soldiers in Iraq. The raid
caused a humanitarian crisis in Southwestern Massachusetts
with hundreds of small children, some of them US citizens,
stranded at daycare and school with no idea where their
parents were. Similar raids have been carried out and in the
last weeks at the Smithfield plant in Tar Heel, North
Carolina and Swift plants in Colorado, Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma
for union busting, in California, Indiana, Arizona, Illinois
and many other places. At Smithfield and Swift especially,
there is a strong 'union busting' element in the raids. The
raids expose the lie of Bushs hypocritical statement that
family values do not end at the Rio Grande.

This summer the House Republican leadership is spearheading
a new wave of racism by holding 32 hearings on
anti-immigrant legislation. Many are field hearings across

elections. The We Are America Alliance and associated
organizations are mobilizing to get out a pro-immigrant
message at each field hearing location.

The mega-marches, April 10 and May 1 rallies and activities
have changed the political landscape. In some areas our
Party is deeply involved, in other areas we are still in the
process of becoming engaged.

George W. Bushs speech to the nation on May 15, 2006
highlighting deployment of the National Guard to the Mexican
border represents an aggressive policy of racist,
anti-immigrant demonization and hysteria. It was a demagogic
attempt to mobilize the conservative base and appeal to fear
in the lead-up to the November Election, and impact the
current Senate debate.

Below are important sample materials that can help move the
struggle for immigrant rights forward. The Senate debate is
expected in February. Many grass roots organizations are
beginning to move. As mentioned in earlier memos we urge the
Districts, clubs, activists to raise the issues with their
Senators and especially any that are members of the
Judiciary Committee. The materials can be adapted to your
local situation by coalitions or grass roots groups and/or
used by clubs as they are. (PDF versions of flyer and
petition are attached.)
