Here’s what’s new this week…
Taxes and Job Creation
As unemployment benefits begin to wind down for millions, we desperately need jobs for these and other workers. In that vein, there was a minor controversy at TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design), which puts on talks on a variety of subjects. Multimillionaire venture capitalist Nick Hanauer gave a must-see presentation on taxation and “income inequality” at the TED University conference in March. And although it was well-received, it was not originally published on the TED website. In it, he says taxing the rich will create jobs and we couldn’t agree more! Paul Krugman concurs – unemployment need not be so high, and there are ways to correct it. The above graph (and link to the Wall Street Journal article) goes into more detail of how the rich already have plenty of money for job creation.
Michigan and Mitt
According to the the BlueGreen Alliance, the GOP blocking passage of long-term transportation solutions is preventing 43,000 transportation project jobs from being created in Michigan alone, and millions more nationwide. And, former Michigander, Mitt Romney, who blames Obama’s policies for the lack of job creation has a bold pledge for a higher unemployment rate than the current administration is shooting for. Mitt destroyed jobs at Bain Capital and will no doubt continue down that path if he’s elected in November.

Scott Marshall is a vice chair of the Communist Party and chair of its Labor Commission. Scott grew up in Virginia where he first became active in the civil rights movement in high school, working on voter registration and anti-Klan projects in rural Southern Virginia and Tennessee. He was also active against the war in Vietnam.
Scott has been a life long trade unionist and was active in rank and file reform movements in the Teamsters, Machinists and Steelworkers unions in the 1970s and '80s. He was co-chair of the Save Our Jobs committee of USWA local 1834 at Pullman Standard in Chicago and active in nationwide organizing against plant shutdowns and layoffs. He was a founder of the unemployed organization Jobs or Income Now (Join), in Chicago, and the National Congress of Unemployed Organizations in the 1980s.
Scott has worked for the Communist Party since 1987 when he became the district organizer for the party in Illinois, a post he held until he was elected chair of the National Labor Commission in 1997. Scott remains active in SOAR (Steelworkers Active Organized Retirees). He lives in Chicago.
