Communists Reply to Bush: “Peace Is Patriotic” Communist Party, USA Demands Peace, Jobs & Justice at Fourth of July National Gathering
(Chicago)—Nearly five hundred communists and allies will gather here this weekend in the city’s historic Palmer House Hilton. The Communist Party, USA, (CPUSA) which was founded in Chicago eighty-five years ago, is hosting its 28th National Convention July 1-3.
One of the key items for discussion will be the ongoing war in Iraq. “In his speech this week President Bush called on Americans to support the troops this Fourth of July weekend,” said CPUSA National Chairman Sam Webb. “We believe the best way to support the troops is to bring them home.”
The Communist Party argues that both the Iraqi and U.S. people are paying the price for the unnecessary invasion and occupation of Iraq. Nearly 2,000 U.S. soldiers and countless Iraqis have died so far. The war also diverts funds from essential domestic projects like better schools, social programs and jobs.
“The Bush administration is trying to privatize the oil industry in Iraq at the same time that they are trying to privatize Social Security at home,” says Judith LeBlanc, CPUSA National Vice-Chair. “Bush policy at home and abroad is about lining the pockets of his big corporate friends like Halliburton and Wal-Mart.”
Communists believe that the problems of poverty, racism and war are inherent to capitalism. They strive for a socialist society, one where human come first and where working people have control over their lives. And the Communist Party works nationally for jobs, justice, equality and peace today.
The National Convention, held every four years, is where the party will elect its national leadership and set policies for the next four years. “I can’t think of a better way to spend Independence Day, says Webb. “Peace is patriotic.”
