PRESS RELEASE

The Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India has issued the
following statement:-

The U.S. Administration has come out with the view that Afghanistan could be only its first target in the strikes against terrorism. Iraq could be the next, and other countries could follow later. This has an ominous ring. It is not clear what course the US will follow in pursuing its aims. Not a word is being said about liquidation of terrorist bases
operating in Pakistan and POK, or about similar terrorist training and
equipping camps which are known to exist in the US itself.

India would thus be dragged along without its concerns of security from
cross-border terrorism being addressed, except for some soothing words and smooth talk from the US envoy in India.

We reiterate the demand that the entire issue should be discussed in the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council, and the campaign against international terrorism should be under the UN auspices and control. There can be no purely military solution to the problem.

We also warn against any Indian involvement in a premature British move to install a government of its choice in Afghanistan. This has always been the U.K. and U.S. method of dealing with other countries.

(S.S. Bhusari)
Office Secretary
