Party eBuilder: 40 years ago today

April 4, 2008

The party-builder will not add to your “to do” list – rather, it aims to keep you up to date on our political focus -- the elections – and provide food for thought with articles on the experience, what works and what doesn’t, of the Party organization, especially the clubs.

In this Issue:
  • Building for a landslide election victory
  • 40 years ago today
  • What does Cesar Chavez mean to you?
  • PWW Flyer of the Week

Landslide 2008Building for a landslide election victory
"Landslide 2008" was the overarching theme of this weekend's NC meeting. Unions and many other organizations are gearing up to participate in the next big stop on the primary trail, Pennsylvania, April 22. Some are traveling into Pennsylvania, and others are using phone banking.

For information about how you can be part of this, check out what’s going on in your local area. Please keep Joelle Fishman, chair of the CPUSA electoral commission, up to date on what you’re doing: joelle.fishman */at/* pobox _._ com

Martin Luther King, JR40 years ago today
On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, during a strike of sanitation workers. King’s life and work has many lessons for today, and should be studied: two suggestions, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community", King’s last book, and for ambitious readers, the three-volume series by Taylor Branch: "Parting the Waters," "Pillar of Fire," and "At Canaan's Edge."

Another good book about that tumultuous decade, "The Bold, Bad Sixties", by Dr. James E. Jackson, published by International Publishers, from the perspective of an African American leader of the CPUSA.

Also, Libero Della Piana spoke with the CPUSA Internet Department a couple months ago about MLK's legacy; watch the video here. That could serve as a good starting point for a club educational.

Cesar ChavezWhat does Cesar Chavez mean to you?
On March 31st, Cesar Chavez would have been 81 years old. Last weekend also happened to be the National Committee meeting of the CPUSA, and we got a chance to ask some NC members what Cesar Chavez means to them.
